DREAMLAND: Spotlight on film photography specialist Sarah Burton and her other worldly work

SarahBurtonWeddings_1.jpg

Film photographer Dreamer of dreams Sarah Burton consistently creates the most magical wedding photography, every photo she ever posts stops us in our tracks. We would love just one single picture of us and our loved one like this to last us forever - let alone our entire wedding captured in this other worldly, life affirming manner!

Sarah is from NZ but has been in the UK for 6 year and loves to travel. She is also in the Most Curious TALENT Directory which is something of a no-brainer as we would rate her as one our favourites in the world right now. We asked her some quick fire questions with quick fire answers and also asked her to choose her Top Three images which are the first three here (including the main one above).

ENJOY!

How would you describe your style?

Cinematic snapshots.

My style is unobtrusive with some gentle direction. Working with natural light and movement for their dreamlike qualities, I just want to capture you in your happy loved up state! I also shoot fashion and documentary portraiture which imbues my wedding work with an editorial quality.

How would you describe a Sarah Burton Couple?

Unpretentious and unconventional.

What’s tends to be your favourite part of a wedding day?

The speeches, I’m a crier and will usually shed a few tears

And, if different, your go to part of the day that you know you’re gonna get some corkers?

The joy and randomness of the just married confetti throw always provides, and I love sneaking away with the couple at magic hour.

What feeling/s do you want imagery to achieve for couples?

Bliss! I love it when my couples say they can’t stop looking at the images

Who are your photography heroes?

Mary Ellen Mark, William Eggleston and Francesca Woodman.

And who is inspiring you right now, photography or otherwise?

I’m re-watching 90s and early 2000s films and getting inspired by the set and costume design. Films like What's Eating Gilbert Grape,The Talented Mr Ripley and Romy and Michelle’s Highschool Reunion.

Top tips - or what do you do or say - to get your couples to give you such relaxed, other worldly vibes? Or what do you do in order to capture those dreamy feels?

Much of the dreaminess comes from shooting film. I usually take my 35mm and 120mm film cameras as well as digital to a wedding. The way film renders light and shadow is delicious.

There’s nothing like the grain, richness and cinematic character of film if you want something a bit more unique.

I also shoot fashion, travel and documentary which feeds into my wedding work.

I like to spend some time walking and talking with the couple on the day, quickly jumping on opportunities that catch my eye, rather than have a strict plan for poses. I shoot as much candid as possible.
