A ge-ode to cool wedding cakes, with Whisk & Drizzle

You may think once you’ve seen one wedding cake, you’ve seen them all, but today’s blog is here to demonstrate that that is not the case. Marianna from Whisk & Drizzle is a neuroscientist-turned-baker, meaning not only do her cakes test delicious but they look absolutely perfect too. And when we say look perfect, we mean - you can’t actually tell them apart from geode crystal. In the infamous words of Bruno Mars, don’t believe me? Just watch!

Tell us about your business – what do you do?

Whisk & Drizzle is a fully bespoke cake company which focuses on creating distinctive, engaging cake designs whilst maintaining the highest standards of taste and quality. Marianna loves experimenting with designs and techniques, taking inspiration from the couple’s ideas and from the natural world. Most importantly however, we can customise the flavours for you. At the end of the day, wedding cakes are meant to be cut and enjoyed, and we believe that the flavour is the most important aspect of a cake. We have spent years developing delicious sponges and fillings based on favourite childhood desserts and puddings which are bound to evoke a sense of nostalgia. Not only that, but we experiment and extend our menu all the time, so you’ll definitely find something you’ll love. We can even create a custom flavour just for you, if there’s something specific you’re after. Oh, and every flavour we make can be made gluten free and vegan, so no one needs to miss out on cake!

Why & how did you start?

After finishing University in 2013, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my career. My degree was in Biomedical Sciences and Neuroscience, but I didn’t want to become a Doctor and I didn’t want to go into research, so I turned to my childhood passion of baking and cooking and enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu London to undertake their prestigious Grand Diplome focusing on French cuisine and patisserie. My grandmother was a chef while I was growing up and I was always helping in the kitchen, so this was something very nostalgic for me. After graduating from Le Cordon Bleu, I worked in Central London restaurants and cafés, but I felt it was very difficult to express myself through food in a restaurant environment – so I decided to take the step to start up my own bespoke cake company. And so, Whisk & Drizzle was born!

Who or what inspires you?

Inspiration is everywhere in the natural world. A lot of my work is inspired by nature – the marble effects, the geode designs, the wood effect. Nature is beautiful you just have to stop and look!

Talk us through a day at the office/studio/wherever you work from.

Every day is different, which is something that I absolutely love. I don’t particularly like routine. A day usually starts with some admin – responding to emails, paying bills, finishing off menus or briefs (while drinking coffee of course!). Then, I’ll start baking. The baking day will be from 8 am to 7 pm but to be honest I never stick to this. If a wedding cake is due, I’ll stay up all night making sure it’s perfect. In the evening, I’ll try do more admin – emails and ordering stock! It’s pretty full on!

What’s your fave part about what you do?

I love baking. I always have. I love creating new flavour combinations and I love coming up with new designs. It’s amazing stepping back and looking at what you’ve managed to create from scratch in just a couple of days! And it’s all edible! And delicious…

What are you excited about for your business?

I’m excited about developing my skills and growing! As I’m the only one that bakes for Whisk and Drizzle, the business will grow as I grow and develop. Just need a little bit of extra time in a day!

Who are your fave 3 wedding suppliers?

  • Brigitte Flowers - I work with Brigitte very closely for all my wedding cake flowers and she never disappoints. Lovely lady and an incredible florist.

  • SK wedding planner Sarah is an amazing human and will go out of her way to make your day extra special and make sure everything runs smoothly. I have worked with her a few times and it was the least stressful weddings I ever did!

  • DKM Events Lovely lady with an abundance of energy and enthusiasm – she will definitely go over and above to make everything work for your special day.

What’s your top advice for couples getting married?

Don’t take things too seriously – it’s your special day and you want everything to be perfect, I know. But there’s nothing more important than being relaxed and enjoying yourselves. What you’ll remember is how you felt on the day and if you’re stressing about everything then that’s what you’ll remember. Trust the suppliers you have chosen and leave the rest to them. Also, hire a wedding planner, or at least an on the day coordinator – I can’t recommend this enough (I think this was probably obvious from the fact that two of my three favourite suppliers are wedding planners). They will make sure everything runs smoothly so you don’t have to worry. They will deal with any issues that may come up and they will make the whole process 1000 times easier! Trust me on this.

If you wanna see Whisk and Drizzle’s delicious creations up close and personal, then make sure you buy your tickets for our alternative wedding fair at The Old Truman Brewery, Shoreditch, between 7th and 9th February 2020. In the meantime, we’ll leave you with these mouthwatering designs…
