Contemporary, damn cool bridesmaids' dresses in sizes 6-20: Rewritten London
Sing along with us to Britney Spears (or Joan Jett, or The Arrows, depending on who you want - we’re unashamedly sticking with Britney): I LOOOOOVE RE-WRIT-TEN. Rewritten London create contemporary bridesmaids’ outfits for damn cool bridesmaids - the kind of dresses you’d actually choose to wear, not ones you wear out of obligation to your best pal. Modern silhouettes, gorgeous breathable fabrics, and an inclusive size range of Sizes 6-20 puts them straight at the top of our Love List, and we think they’ll be on yours very soon too. We chatted to Katie & Fran below:
Tell us about your business – what do you do? What do you do differently to everyone else?
We are Rewritten London and we create contemporary dresses for the modern day adult bridesmaid. We design dresses, jumpsuits and separates that you will want to wear again and again - they are beautifully cut, flattering and designed with detail and consideration - we like to call it sustainable bridesmaids dressing, no more unworn outfits gathering dust at the back of your wardrobe. The collection is hand-designed and manufactured in London where we create contemporary designs in the most beautiful fabric and colour combinations. We like to push the boundaries of bridesmaids dressing and are constantly challenging the status quo - why not rock out a flowing palazzo trouser or jumpsuit in a bold colour on your best mates big day?
Why & how did you start?
We created our brand in 2016 when Katie got married and couldn't find any fashion-forward, chic, contemporary dresses for her bridesmaids. Fran’s background is fashion design and marketing and Katie is a retail guru so between us we had the right skill set to create the brand. We worked together previously to launching our brand and so knew we could work well together, also we are best mates so that helps too. We launched Rewritten three years ago almost to the day and it has been an absolute rollercoaster ever since, we now sell our designs in over 30 stockists, globally via our website and our East London flagship store.
Who or what inspires you (don’t be afraid to be specific & bold!)
So much inspires us, when we are creating a new collection we will put together a mood board that might have anything from architecture to Pantone references to flowers and photographs from a particular decade. For example, the 70’s was a key inspiration for the Soho Jumpsuit and the Berlin dress is straight out of the 90’s with a square neck and side split. We are all about promoting body confidence and that has to take priority when selecting which designs to take forwards - whether short or tall, big or small, we want every girl of every size to feel equally beautiful when wearing our styles, and so in that sense, a lot of our designs are timeless as they are easy-to-wear, flattering shapes but yet push the boundaries of bridesmaids dressing by incorporating trouser legs and modern silhouettes.
One of the things we are really known for is our bold colour palette which is unusual for a bridesmaids brand. We don’t shy away from strong colours and we are inspired by big beautiful colours - it is intentional that all of our colours can be mixed and matched and we encourage our brides to shop that way, mixing styles and colours across their groups of bridesmaids, allowing their girls to really show off their individual personalities. The back and blue bird print from our party edit also looks incredible mixed in with our forest green, marine and oyster tones.
Talk us through a day at the office/studio/wherever you work from.
We just moved into our new office in Hackney Wick where we also have our London flagship store and so the average day tends to involve some painting or building of Ikea furniture at the moment! Other than that a typical day starts at 10am when we sit down with the team and run through the days activities or discuss ongoing orders over a cup of tea. Then a couple of hours of emails before any meetings start. As co-founders, we will probably be out of the office for a meeting or workshop in the afternoon - either with a potential new stockist, at a sustainability workshop with The Trampery or prepping for a presentation or wedding fair. We also spend a lot of time with our London manufacturers, working on new designs and patterns, before returning to the showroom for evening appointments - we are open on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday late night and allocate the appointments between us and the team - one of the best bits is getting to meet our customers and see what they think of the dresses!
What’s your fave part about what you do?
Thats an easy one. Seeing all of our gorgeous bridesmaids wearing our dresses. We LOVE being tagged in pictures from our brides big days and there genuinely is nothing better than seeing beautiful women rocking out our designs. Especially on the dance floor, we particularly love the dance floor pictures. What are you excited about for your business? We have some super exciting projects in the pipeline that we can’t reveal yet but that will change how we view the lifecycle of a bridesmaids dress. Watch this space.
Who are your fave 3 wedding suppliers?
Heart Aflutter for an exquisite selection of bridal wear, Portraits Bridal for the best makeup looks, Blume for her incredible florals and ARD Bakery for literally the most insanely awesome (and delicious) cakes we have ever seen.
What’s your top advice for couples getting married?
Try and enjoy the wedding planning process and don’t sweat the small stuff. Oh and colour wise, try not to go in with a very specific colour palette - a looser colour palette of tonal shades will always be easier to match to and means you avoid disappointment if you cant find accessories/dresses in an exact colour.
Catch the Rewritten ladies and their stunning bridesmaids’ outfits at our London fair at the Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, from Friday 7th February to Sunday 9th February. Grab tickets here
