Lisa Jane Photography: Our Favourite Storyteller
What can we say about Lisa Jane? It’s hard to write words about a natural born storyteller, but here goes nuttin’. The level of love that Lisa has for every single one of her couples is something we’ve never seen in the industry before. Her photos radiate love, whether that’s joyous, brightly coloured, f***-yeah-we-just-got-married love, or more quiet, reflexive, my-hand-is-there-to-let-you-know-I’m-here love. Lisa captures it all in shots that are more pieces of art than photos - innovative angles, emotive editing, and an undeniable creative eye. We can’t wait for you to meet her in person at the fair because you’re just going to fall in love - but here’s some prep in the meantime!
Tell us about your business – what do you do?
I am Lisa of Lisa Jane Photography. A London girl born and raised, I am photographer, a hopeless romantic and ridiculously passionate about what I do. What I do is incredibly personal and I am not ashamed to say I get swept up in the emotion of the day and immerse myself in all the love and laughter. I try to photograph all the big moments but also the little moments, the little laughs and tears, the secret smiles and gentle touches. Really telling the whole story of the day. My couples are really important to me and I am totally invested in them and their day. I want all my couples to look back at their photos and remember what it felt like in that moment. To feel like they are immersed in the day again and to have all those memories come flooding back. Plus I am the worlds biggest confetti fan. I love going home at the end of a wedding and finding confetti in my hair, in my sock and in my camera bag and I have been known to gleefully let off confetti canons during the party!!!
Why & how did you start?
I picked up a camera when I was 16 and fell in love. There was something about capturing a moment, holding it still but also how all these wonderful emotions and memories would come flooding back when looking at a photograph. I've always had a camera in hand and it was such a personal thing for me that I never intended it to be a business, but I ended up photographing a wedding and fell in love. Being witness to such connections and emotions was pretty special and the rest is history
Who or what inspires you?
Music, film, books, people, connections, everyday life. There is no one thing inspires me but it is always driven by an emotional connection. I love nothing more than when something gives you goosebumps. It can be a passage from a book, a song lyric, a scene in a movie or a shaft of light that makes me want to run for my camera and try and capture that feeling.
Talk us through a day at the office/studio/wherever you work from
If I am in the studio the day always starts with coffee. Then the to-do list comes out. Some days are structured around editing and others are structured around admin but there will always be a podcast or music in the background and I have been compiling a list of all my couples music choices from their day, mainly their entrance and exit music and their first dance song. Music has been a huge part of my life and a big inspiration so it is always nice to immerse myself in the music for their weddings.
What’s your fave part about what you do?
Getting to meet some amazing people and witness, document and be a part of such an emotional day. Photographing weddings is such a personal and intimate experience and I love being a part of such a personal day. I get to witness and document people at their most excited, most emotional and most nervous. And I do not take that for granted. I love that couples allow me into their world for the day and I am the person that will get emotional with you. I have cried when my brides have put on dresses, or when my grooms have walked in together. I have smiled so hard when a couples first dance song has started and I have been swept up in a couples vows. I am a hopeless romantic so when it comes to weddings, I am whole-heartedly invested in my couples, their day and the crazy adventure we call marriage and love.
What are you excited about for your business?
I am excited to see where the next few years take me. It has been an incredible journey so far, working a full time job while starting my business to winning awards, getting featured on the best wedding blogs to photographing lookbooks. I honestly would never have believed that I would be where I am now. Not only that, I am excited to meet amazing couples and make friends with some of the incredible people in the wedding world. There are some amazing, talented people out there and it is so inspiring to witness their creativity and enthusiasm. Plus I love the freedom photography gives me. I am hoping to really concentrate on some personal work and connecting with like-minded creatives to create some beautiful images.
Who are your fave 3 wedding suppliers?
Ink & Thimble - this woman's creativity and approach to what she does is inspiring. She works with such compassion and sensitivity and the items she produces are works of art. Everyone needs an Ink & Thimble piece at their wedding.
Ard Bakery - I have no idea how they create such incredible looking cakes. They are masterpieces and the bonus is that they taste amazing.
Heart a Flutter - I have been lucky enough to photograph a couple of Heart a Flutter brides and not only have the brides looked amazing and felt confident, they have also raved about the team and service they received. They are obviously so passionate about what they do and that makes a huge difference when planning a wedding.
(p.s. we didn’t even pay her to say this - but all 3 of these amazing suppliers are exhibiting at our 2020 London fair!)
What’s your top advice for couples getting married?
With my 8 years of shooting weddings and recently getting married, there is so much I want to say I could write an essay on this. - Be you - pour your heart and soul as a couple into your wedding. It's your day to party and celebrate with your favourites so fill it with your love and passion and you will look back with one hell of a happy heart - embrace the day - it is a rollercoaster of emotions and the most important part of the day is marrying the one you love. Find 5 mins to be alone, you and your person and then walk back in to your wedding and see what you have created and built. they are your people, you team, you support. - Trust your people - everyone supplier you bring on board for your wedding will be full of passion, ideas and love what they do, so trust them and let them run wild. - Make planning fun - it will get stressful at times , so try and make every decision about your wedding a fun experience. Take yourselves off to the pub, your favourite coffee shop to talk about your plans. Have date nights away from planning and make decisions over a bottle of your favourite wine.
Come and see Lisa and chat all things coffee, confetti, and complete love stories at our London fair THIS WEEKEND! Grab your tickets here.
